“Hip hip hooray, unemployment is down. What does that mean in my life?”
It’s not entirely clear what Speaker Pelosi meant here. Is she being sarcastic? Is she trying to imagine how the American worker thinks? Because it sort of is a good thing that unemployment is down, and, especially for the person who found a job, it may mean quite a lot. Either way though, it seems like an odd way to phrase things. Are there people around who still say “hip hip hooray?” And shouldn’t they be in nursing homes instead of holding a gavel?
