Europe shares mixed but FTSE rises after BOE rate hike; Credit Suisse up 5% – CNBC

European stocks were mixed in afternoon trade Thursday, as investors digested corporate earnings and reacted to a sharp fall in sterling.

New Fed chair

Investors are anxiously awaiting news of who’s going to be the next chair of the Federal Reserve. President Donald Trump is expected to make his decision on Thursday.

Fed Governor Jay Powell has been a recent favorite to take on the position from current Chair Janet Yellen — who’s also a key candidate — in early 2018.

Meantime, on Wednesday, the Federal Open Market Committee held its interest rates at current levels, leaving the door open for a rate hike to occur at its next meeting in December.

Speaking of the U.S., equities traded around the flatline in early trade, as Wall Street waited for tax reform announcements.
